Pune-Student’s City

Pune-Student’s City
From being a small town called Punnyapattanam meaning the city of auspicious deeds, whose residents were the Koli and Musician tribes of Maharashtra, Pune has matured into a focal point of immense educational progress, technological advancement and an interesting cultural potpourri. Pune’s educational system is such a hot favorite with the student community of India and the world that it is indisputably a ‘Student City’.

Owing to the presence of a horde of universities that belong to a class that’s unparalleled by a majority of institutes in India, Pune pulls in 40 percent of the foreign student influx in the country. Apart from the world class universities and institutes in Pune, there are other components that make the city extremely student-friendly.

The fair climatic conditions all year long, the generous natural and man-made structures all around, the enlivening nightlife, the multiplexes that screen the best movies from the world over, the eating joints that serve everything from the ever-popular ‘Vada Pav’ to international cuisines and much more. There are approximately seven lakh students that fly in from different countries of the world to Pune and seldom run out of places to lounge around and unwind at.

Those with a cultural disposition make a beeline for the hip and happening. Pune Festival-an annual extravaganza that showcases the best artistic talents from the city and has the who’s who of the nation in attendance. That’s not all, there are a host of other culturally rich events in Pune, classical and rock music concerts and internationally acclaimed film festivals interspersed with innumerable intra and inter college competitions that are high on youth energy and talent.

When the sun sets on this exuberant city and the students shut their books, it is time to take a break from the scholastic rituals. And heading to savor international & local cuisines at restaurant chains like Pizza Hut, Domino's, Smokin' Joes, McDonalds, Kamats is an excellent idea. There’s Continental, Chinese, Indian food to devour at Pune. Cuisines from all over India are available for the student community at any mess on daily/monthly basis near university campuses.

A low crime rate, safe and secured living conditions and plenty of affordable hostel, guest house and dormitory accommodation offered by the universities make Pune all the more liable to the student crowds pouring in from different states of India and of the world. Students belonging to such diverse backgrounds add to the already cosmopolitan character of the city. And if that’s not enough, Pune boasts of a sound and consistent network of local and outstation buses, trains and other means of transport.

There are public transport buses that connect important parts of the city from Swargate, Deccan Gymkhana, Shivajinagar, Pune Station, MG Bus Stand, Saras Baug, Pune Municipal Corporation and Kothrud. There are also loads of two-wheelers in Pune apart from the auto-rickshaws and car cabs. Puneites are ferried to nearby holiday destinations like Lonavala, Khandala and Mahabaleshwar by the local trains in the city. Pune’s connectivity to neighboring Mumbai and other metropolises of the country by air, rail and road is quite sturdy.

Besides the many top educational and research institutions like Indira Group of Institutes,Symbiosis,Bharati Vidyapeeth,MIT, Singad ,ILS  etc.in the ‘Oxford of the East’, there are centers for sports, yoga, ayurveda, culture and social services. Not just that, the city along with Mumbai has emerged into one of the most powerful industrial and economic belts of the country and is rapidly evolving into the second Silicon Valley of India due to the investments of IT giants like Satyam Computers, Mahindra-British Telecom and Infosys and others.

  1. Very informative post. Bustling and commercial, leafy and slow, cosmopolitan and vintage, Pune effortlessly adds up to more than the sum of its parts. It is a city where history often asserts itself, but with a careless lightness. Check out all Oyo rooms in Pune also.
